bullet   Another name for Solino was Selina Sumner.

bullet  General Notes:

Solino was a poorly girl (weak constitution) the Doctor advised her father to take her out to Russia with him when he went - to do her good.

When Vara Penney died she had a huge black box where Selina's (?) clothes were stored on board ship (journey took "months on end").

Neville also recalls that Solino "had twins who died in infancy" - I;m not sure whether she was married to Sam or Ernest at this time.

Selina kept two public houses. The "Hare and Hounds" on Werneth Low and the Navigation Hotel in Woodley. Ernest Hubbard was a drinker who drank the profits of the pub prior to leaving his wife - this contributed to Selina losing the pub. 156

bullet  Noted events in her life were:

Occupation: Landlady/Bar-Maid. 156

Census: 1881, 3 Apr 1881, 51 Bolton Street, Oldham, Lancashire. 154,157

Census: 1901, 31 Mar 1901, The Navigation Hotel, 134 Hyde Road, Woodley, Cheshire.

Solino married Ernest Victor Emmanuel Hubbard, son of Robert Hubbard and Annie Connair, in 1906 in Stockport, Cheshire.152 (Ernest Victor Emmanuel Hubbard was born in 1873 in Hilborough, Norfolk 18,158.)

bullet  Noted events in their marriage were:

Separation, 1908. 156

bullet  Marriage Notes:

"Victor drank with all his cronies - so he left Selina (before or after Hare & Hounds? - probably after). Left her with his 2 stepchildren, Sam & Vara, Olga and twins who died later. She couldn't cope with the pub on her own and was left without anything."

Selina then moved to a cottage at the bottom of Joel Lane in Gee Cross, then eventually to Rowbotham Street. Twins died.
Selina took in washing and baking etc to get by. She used to help as a barmaid in other people's pubs - e.g. the Grapes in Gee Cross - demoralising after owning her own public house."

Solino next married Samuel Penney, son of David Penney and Charlotte Poundall, circa 1896. (Samuel Penney was born in 1870 in Godley, Cheshire 18,159 and died in 1905 160.) The cause of his death was Typhoid fever.

bullet  Marriage Notes:

Selina was the daughter of Robert Sumner, who had become a Mill Manager. Sam Penney was an engineer at Mather & Platt's. Neville Grieves believes that this is how they met. 156
