   Another name for Ernest was Victor Hubbard.

  General Notes:

Oral family history (recounted by Neville Grieves) tells that Victor was a farmer's son (and that his father was a gentleman farmer/ landowner) . He was apparently an ex soldier who retired from the army in the early 1900s.

• Occupation: Soldier, 1890s?. ⁶ This is according to the oral history that Neville Grieves received from his mother (Ernest was Neville's grandfather).

• Occupation: Agricultural labourer, 1901. ²

Ernest married Solino Sumner, daughter of Robert Sumner and Eliza (Sumner), in 1906 in Stockport.¹ (Solino Sumner was born in 1871 in Farnworth, Lancashire. ^{7 8}, christened on 20 Aug 1871 in St. John The Evangelist, Farnsworth & Kearsley, Lancashire ⁹ and died in Nov 1942 in Bolton, Lancashire. ^{6 10}.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Victor drank with all his cronies - so he left Selina (before or after Hare & Hounds? - probably after). Left her with his 2 stepchildren, Sam & Vara, Olga and twins who died later. She couldn't cope with the pub on her own and was left without anything."

Selina then moved to a cottage at the bottom of Joel Lane in Gee Cross, then eventually to Rowbotham Street. Twins died.
Selina took in washing and baking etc to get by. She used to help as a barmaid in other people's pubs - e.g. the Grapes in Gee Cross - demoralising after owning her own public house."
